Learning the basics of search engine optimization (SEO) can be intimidating for new Hosts, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some easy SEO tips to help your Experience rank higher in search and get discovered by browsing guests.

Think like a guest

Imagine for a moment that you’re a guest trying to find an activity similar to your Experience. What would you type into a search engine to find it?

When searching for activities online, we tend to focus on location and category (i.e., food tour, snorkeling, online class, etc.). That’s why including these in the title of your Experience can be a good strategy for boosting SEO relevance.

A listing title like “#1 bike tour” is a good start, but “#1 bike tour in Melbourne” may be even better.

Do keyword research

Keywords are the words and phrases that describe your listing the best. Including important keywords within the title and description of your Experience can help your listing rank higher in search results and get more traffic.

The terms you choose should reflect what your audience is searching for. For example, if you host a cooking class in Italy, you may want to name your Experience “Best pasta-making class in Rome.”

There are a number of tools you can use to do keyword research. Wordstream is a free option, while SEMrush, KWFinder, and Google Ads are other common alternatives.*

Keep things natural

Remember that ranking higher in search may not be the only thing that matters—the content of your Experience listing should also be engaging so that your target audience feels inspired to book with you. Try to include your keywords in a way that sounds natural and clear to potential guests.

While keywords are important, you may want to avoid overusing them in the listing description. This is a practice known as “keyword stuffing” that can actually harm rankings, as Google and other search engines can tell when terms are used excessively or in an unnatural way.

Consider writing your content for your target audience first, and the search ranking algorithms second.

Learn from other Hosts

If you want to learn more about SEO best practices for optimizing your listing, other Hosts can be a great resource. Hosts across the globe, including Host Amylee of Toronto and Host Kevino of Mexico City, offer Experiences dedicated to sharing their SEO tips for getting more bookings and making your listing stand out.

“Understanding SEO has been crucial to the success of my own listing,” Kevino says. “Making simple changes can lead to big results in terms of attracting potential guests.”
